Twins finish second at district tourney

Posted: Monday, July 26, 2004

The American Legion Twins split a pair of games in Wasilla Sunday, clinching second place in the Alaska American Legion State District II Tournament.

The Twins, who play their home games in Kenai, won their first game of the day 8-2, defeating the Fairbanks squad. Shawn Isaacs picked up the win for the Twins, going seven innings and recording seven strikeouts, while Alex Johansen and Cole Chappell each threw and inning of scoreless relief.

Jake Simpson swung a big stick at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a double and driving in four runs.

"The nice thing about today was timely hitting," said Twins head coach John Kennedy. "Almost every hit we had drove in a run."

The Twins also were sharp in the field, committing just one error against Fairbanks after making nine miscues in the tournament opener Saturday.

The Twins dropped their second game of the day to the host Road Warriors 7-5. Twins starter Erich Simpson cruised into the eighth inning, but an injury then forced the plate umpire out of the game. Kennedy said that with the change in umpires came a change in the strike zone, and Simpson wasn't able to get some of the calls he had been getting earlier in the game.

The Road Warriors took advantage and scored six runs, including a grand slam.

"The kids played really well. We played a great game," Kennedy said.

Wasilla earned the district's top seed for next week's state tournament while the Twins will be second and Fairbanks third.

The Twins will wait to see their matchup for next week's championships but in the mean time will face an alumni squad for the third time this season, with the series tied at one game apiece.

Any alumni interested in playing who have not been contacted should call Lance Coz at 283-6101 and leave a message with contact information.

The game is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. at Coarl Seymour Memorial Park in Kenai and will be played with wood bats.
