Trooper marries Washington couple

Posted: Monday, July 26, 2004

A Washington couple was married earlier this month in a special beach ceremony near Ninilchik.

Lane H. Olinghouse of Everett, Wash., and Joan R. Bowles of Union, Wash., were wed at 2:30 p.m. July 16 at Deep Creek State Park, overlooking the beach. Alaska State Trooper Bryan Barlow of the Ninilchik-Homer post officiated. Witnesses were Ted and Rose Chandler of Anchorage and camp hosts Gene and Jill Perry of New York. Trooper Barlow's wife, Ophelia, also attended.

The newlyweds are an older couple who enjoy traveling, especially in Alaska. They met last August while camping in Long Beach, Wash., while Bowles was traveling with her granddaughter, Brianna.

"I was at the swimming pool in the only shade around, and I asked if she wouldn't like to share some shade," Olinghouse recalled.

"He mentioned Alaska, and that got it started," Bowles said.

The couple was engaged in Mexico in February and decided to make the most of their wedding day.

They chose the date because it also was the 84th birthday of Bowles' brother, Neil McConaghy. They wanted to be married by a trooper in memory of Bowles' son-in-law, William Lowry, a Tacoma, Wash., police officer who was killed in the line of duty.

And as for the location? Well, Bowles said, "We both love Alaska. We've been several times, and we love it here."

The newlyweds have been in the state for about two months and will continue traveling in Alaska for the next month or so before returning to Washington.
