Nominations for arts, humanities awards sought

Nominations for the Governor's Awards for the Arts and Humanities are being accepted through Sunday. Nomination forms and criteria are available online at or from

The four humanities categories are Humanities Civic Advocate, Alaskan Muse, Distinguished Cultural Services and Humanities Lifetime Achievement.

The seven categories for the arts awards are Arts Education, Arts Advocacy, Arts Business Leadership, Individual Artist, Arts Organization, Native Arts and the Margaret Nick Cooke Award for Alaska Native Arts and Language.

Wildlife rescue 5-K planned

The Alaska SeaLife Center will hold its sixth annual 5-kilometer Wildlife Rescue Run event Aug. 7 at the center. Proceeds will go to support the rescue and rehabilitation program at the center.

Preregistration fees are $15 for adults or $10 for children. On race day, registration fees increase to $20 per adult and $13 per child. Homer Seafair rodeo planned

The Homer Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with the U.S. Coast Guard and numerous business sponsors, will host the Home Seafair Safety Rodeo from noon to 4 p.m. Aug. 7 at the Homer Marine Terminal (barge basin) on the Homer Spit.

The event is to promote the importance of boating safety skills among commercial, charter and pleasure boat fleets.

Some of the planned activities are a U.S. Coast Guard rescue demonstration, survival suit races, a heaving line contest, a boat and gear swap meet and an oyster slurp. For more information, call (907) 235-7740 or visit

Fox Island cruise fund-raiser set

The Kenai Peninsula United Way will hold a Kenai Fjords Fox Island Cruise fund-raiser Aug. 29 in Seward. The cost is $50 per person and includes the afternoon cruise to Fox Island and dinner.

Live music and an outcry and bucket silent auction are some of the planned activities. For more information, call Amy at 283-9500.

WRCC fund-raiser slated

The 20th annual WRCC-KSRM Radiothon will be held Sept. 13. Volunteers are being sought to work remote teams and help organize the event. It is the only major fund-raiser held for the Women's Resource and Crisis Center. For more information or to volunteer, call June at 283-9479.

Fish canning information available

The University of Alaska Cooperative Extension office recently completed research on canning fish in quart jars. It has a free publication available explaining the process at its office in the Doors and Windows Building on Kalifornsky Beach Road. For more information, call 262-5824.

The extension office reminds canners to have their pressure dial gauge tested for accuracy before canning fish.
