Oilers finish trip with loss to Bucs

Posted: Tuesday, July 26, 2005

The Anchorage Bucs defeated the Peninsula Oilers 4-1 Monday in Alaska Baseball League action in Anchorage.

The loss left the Oilers with a 3-4 record on their road trip. The team now takes a day off before concluding the 2005 season with a pair of games at Coral Seymour Memorial Park. The Oilers play the Mat-Su Miners at 6 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday.

The Bucs rode the bat of Jason Corder and the arm of Zack Ashwood to victory Monday. Corder had a three-run home run in the first inning, and Ashwood pitched a complete game and yielded just four hits and one unearned run.

Chase Christianson, a reliever making his first start for the Oilers this year, took the loss because he got off to a bad start. Christianson gave up four runs and five hits in the first inning. After that, he settled down and shut out the Bucs through the sixth inning, giving up just three more hits after the first inning.

Reliever Brian Chambers continued to blank the Bucs, giving up just one hit in two innings of work.

Ashwood worked out of some early jams and got stronger as the game went on. In the first inning, Ryan Gipson reached third base with just one out. Jake Kahaulelio hit a ground ball to third and Gipson was thrown out at the plate, snuffing that rally.

With one out in the top of the third inning, Ashwood walked Gipson and Salas. However, Gipson made the second out when he was thrown out stealing third. Kahaulelio then singled, but Salas was thrown out at the plate trying to score.

The Oilers got their lone run of the game in the fourth inning, when Chad Tracy led off the inning with a double. After Matt Inouye grounded out, Tracy advanced to third on a ground out by Jack Rye, who had two of the Oilers' four hits. Tracy then scored when Bucs catcher Adam Zornes threw wildly on an attempted pickoff play at third.
