Community festival planned

The Funny River Chamber of Commerce and Community Association will host its annual Funny River Festival this Friday through Sunday at the community center at Mile 11 of Funny River Road.

A parade, golf scrambles, cribbage and nickels tourneys, raffles, drawings, an auction, cake walks and toilet bowl races are some of the planned activities.

Vendors, bands wanted for festival

The North Road Summer Festival will be held at the Aug. 12 and 13 Nikiski Senior Citizens Center. Crafters, food vendors and bands are wanted for the event. Space is available in the parking lot and inside the center for vendors and in the garden for live bands.

The space fee is $10 in the parking lot and $15 inside the building. There is no fee for bands. For more information, call 776-7654.

Citizen scientists sought

The Alaska Citizen Science Project is looking for volunteers in the Southcentral and Interior Alaska to help study bats and to monitor nesting loons and grebes.

Child protection to be discussed

The Ninilchik Traditional Council will host a community meeting at 6 p.m. Aug. 8 at the Ninilchik Traditional Council substance building across from the school.

The topic will be the child protection system in the state of Alaska, to introduce the community to agencies involved in child protection, to clarify roles, functions and responsibilities of these agencies and to explain the the interrelation of the agencies.

The public is encouraged to attend.

Women's run seeks volunteers

The LeeShore Center in Kenai is seeking volunteers for its 18th annual Kenai Peninsula Run for Women on Aug. 13.

Volunteers are needed to staff waters tables, serve lunch and for safety positions along the race route. Safety volunteers will need to take a short flagging course at the Kenai Police Department a few days before the run. For more information or to volunteer, call 283-9479.
