Oilers take 2 of 3 games

Posted: Sunday, July 26, 2009

Kyle Barraclough allowed just one hit in eight innings and Michael Miller went 3-for-4 with a double and triple in leading the visiting Oilers to a 5-1 win over the Alaska Goldpanners of Fairbanks on Saturday at Growden Memorial Park.

Barraclough gave up a single to the second batter he faced, but hardly anything after that.

He walked just one and struck out three in helping the Oilers win the five-game series 3-2 and improve to 17-22 on the Alaska Baseball League season, while the Panners sit at 17-23.

The Oilers, who smashed 12 hits, took a 3-0 lead in the third, added another run in each of the fourth and seventh innings and held on for the win. Alaska scored its lone run in the ninth off Peninsula reliever David Brown, who surrendered two hits in his one inning of work.

After tossing a complete-game, one-hitter in blanking the Oilers at Coral Seymour Memorial Park earlier this summer, Panners pitcher Mike McCarthy had a more difficult time on Saturday. He allowed five runs, all earned, on 10 hits and three walks with six strikeouts.

On Friday, the Oilers and the Panners split a doubleheader after splitting their twin bill on Thursday.

In the first game, the Oilers' bats boomed en route to a 5-0 victory. Jonathan Kaskow got things started with a two-run home run in the first inning, while Glen Johnson added a two-run blast in the third inning. Goldpanners starter David Colvin, who entered the game with a 2.37 ERA, took the loss to fall to 0-5.

Chad Smith pitched five shutout innings to pick up the win for the Oilers.

The Oilers continued the power surge early in the second game, but fell 5-4. Mark Tracy hit a two-run home run for the Oilers in the first inning.

The Panners battled back in the third inning when Evan Simonitsch conked a grand slam. The blast erased a three-run deficit and put the Panners ahead 5-4. It was just the second home run of the season for Simonitsch.

Jeeter Ishida got the win for the Panners in relief of starter Alex Gillingham.

The Oilers tried to make a comeback in the seventh inning, putting runners on first and second with nobody out. However, the next Oilers batter popped up a bunt against reliever Kyle Brule. He let the ball drop before throwing to Martin Medina at third for a force out. Medina then threw to second to complete the double play and put a severe dent in the rally.

Brule then finished off the save by getting a ground-out.
