FAIRBANKS (AP) -- The Parks Highway near Cantwell was closed for about 30 minutes Thursday afternoon while crews cleaned up after a one-vehicle rollover.
Cantwell Alaska State Trooper George Kammer said Christina Potter, 39, and her son, Trevor Castello, 7, both from Florida, suffered head injuries and were flown to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital.
Kammer said Potter was driving to Anchorage at 2:10 p.m. when she fell asleep at the wheel, went in and out of the ditch and rolled the car three times at Mile 205, Kammer said. The car landed in the middle of the road and caught fire.
''They went to McKinley overnight. She (Potter) said they just stayed up too late,'' Kammer said.
Kammer said Potter was cited for negligent driving and failure to provide a safety belt for her son.
The family was visiting Potter's sister in Anchorage and was following relatives who were in another car ahead of her, Kammer said. Potter had her sister's two sons in the car with her. They were not injured.
