Oilers can clinch NBC berth today

Posted: Sunday, July 27, 2003

The Peninsula Oilers will clinch a berth in the National Baseball Congress World Series if they sweep a doubleheader against Athletes in Action today at Hermon Brothers Field in Palmer.

The doubleheader was scheduled for Saturday in Fairbanks, but was postponed due to rain.

The Oilers could have been eliminated from the ABL hunt Saturday even though they played no baseball.

However, the Anchorage Glacier Pilots lost to the Mat-Su Miners 6-3. This left the Glacier Pilots at 18-17 in the ABL, while the Oilers are at 17-16. The Glacier Pilots hold a tiebreaker edge over the Oilers, so if the Glacier Pilots had won, the Oilers could not have caught them.

Now, with two wins today, the Oilers can finish one game ahead of the Glacier Pilots with a 19-16 record.

In Friday's game, the Oilers jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but Athletes in Action stormed back for a 9-4 victory.

In the top of the first inning, Joe Holland led off with a double and scored on a single by Brent Lewis.

In the top of the fifth inning, Jimmy Bacon led off with a triple and came around to scored on a double by Holland.

Finally, the Oilers took a 3-0 advantage in the top of the sixth inning when Ben Fritz led off by getting hit by a pitch then scored on a sacrifice fly by Joe Frazee.

However, after that Rich Sorenson settled in to record the victory while his teammates battered back with two runs in the sixth, three runs in the seventh and four runs in the eighth inning.

The major damage came from Michael Cline (2-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs), Jeremy Accardo (2-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs) and Eric Streelman (2-for-5 with three RBIs).

Kris Gawriluk picked up the loss for the Oilers, pitching 1 1-3 innings and yielding six earned runs on seven hits.

Today's doubleheader starts at 3:30 p.m. and can be heard on 1140 KSLD.
