Kenai resident Betsy Ross Cullen died Friday, July 22, 2005, at Central Peninsula General Hospital in Soldotna. She was 66.

Betsy Ross Martin was born July 4, 1939, in Detroit and grew up in Indianapolis. Her family moved to the Los Angeles area in 1953, where she attended Westchester High School. She received an associate of arts degree from Santa Monica City College.

At age 20, she joined the Navy and was a nurse at the U.S. Naval Hospital in San Diego. She married Floyd Cullen in 1962 and had three children between 1963 and 1968 and one son in 1980.

The Cullens moved to Tucson in 1968. They later lived in Lake Odessa, Mich., Creston, Neb., Concordia, Kan., and Helena, Mont. She moved to Soldotna in 1999.

Mrs. Cullen's occupations included nursing, office assistant, seamstress and cook. In Alaska, she worked at the Soldotna Senior Citizens Center, Clearview Assisted Living Center in Seward and The Salvation Army in Soldotna.

She enjoyed playing cards, bingo, computer games and working crossword puzzles.

Since August 2004, Mrs. Cullen had been recovering from a stroke.

Mrs. Cullen was preceded in death by her husband, who died in 1994; and her daughter and best friend Donna Cullen, who died in a car accident in 1995.

She is survived by her sons, Tom and Greg Cullen of Soldotna and Doug Cullen of Helena; and sister, Sally Oliver of California.

Arrangements were made by Peninsula Memorial Chapel in Kenai.
