The annual Funny River Festival kicks off today and will run through Sunday with games, events, food, prizes and entertainment.
The festival is held to raise money for Funny River's community center, which was built by volunteers from a grant the community received. The center provides a meeting space for the town's ladies group, community council and emergency services group, hosts game nights, various potluck dinners and a New Year's Eve party, and may someday even house a library.
This year's slogan, "Paving the Way," was chosen in honor of the community's road being paved last year. With the increased access, it is hoped that more people will attend, said festival organizer Wilda Snow.
"Funny River is a friendly place and everybody makes everyone feel welcome," Snow said. "It's a good feeling, it brings a lot of pleasure and joy to all the year-round residents who need a fun place to get away."
The festival will be held on the grounds of the Funny River Community Center, regardless of weather. "We won't let that worry us," Snow said. "We're Alaskans after all."
