The Soldotna 9- and 10-year-old All-Star Little League team won the District I Tournament Saturday in Eagle River by defeating Dimond West 4-3 in the championship game. It was the first time a Soldotna Little League 9-and 10-year old team has won the tournament.
The team started the tournament with three victories before facing Dimond West on July 21. The Soldotna All-Stars defeated the defending state champs 6-2. Dimond West worked its way back through the losers' bracket, but lost to the Soldotna All-Stars again in Saturday's championship.
"For a group 9 and 10 years old, it's the most fundamentally sound group of kids I've ever seen," manager Doug Wehrli said.
Wehrli said the team had three errors in the entire tournament. The team also allowed only one stolen base. He said he and coaches John Darrow and Mike Boulette worked the team hard, and the team responded.
The team also dealt with adversity, losing its scheduled starting pitcher to injury before Wednesday's game.
"The kids didn't miss a beat," Wehrli said. "They played harder and tougher."
The team moves on to the state tournament in North Pole for a best-of-three tournament Friday, Saturday and, if necessary, Sunday.
