Last week, I was very saddened to hear of former State Rep. Drew Scalzi's passing, which took a good man and a good friend to many, far too soon.
I was fortunate to meet Drew during the 22nd Legislature, as we were both freshmen legislators and both feeling a bit like fish out of water.
Drew immediately stood out in the group as having a real enthusiasm for the job and a grin that spread from ear to ear. I grew to admire his willingness to wade into controversy and speak out on tough issues.
He and I shared many laughs about how it was that an ironworker and a cement finisher turned commercial fisherman were now being addressed as the "Honorable" anything, as opposed to what they called us out on a construction site.
Drew certainly recognized the serious side of the job and appreciated the trust people had placed in him.
He truly deserved the title "Honorable," and Alaska is a better place for his being here.
