Lifelong Kenai resident and Alaska Native Esther Paula Segura died Friday, July 24, 2009, at Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage with her family by her side. She was 57.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 28, at the Holy Assumption of the Virgin Mary Russian Orthodox Church in Kenai. Father Thomas Andrew will officiate. The burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be her nephews, Dale Segura, Jim Segura Jr., David Segura Jr., Todd Smagge, Lorne Smagge and Emil Wilson.
Mrs. Segura was born Sept. 14, 1951, in Kenai. She lived in Kenai all her life and worked for the state of Alaska for 23 years. She also worked for the Kenaitze Indian Tribe and numerous other jobs throughout her life. She retired from the state in 2006.
Mrs. Segura was a member of the church, Kenaitze Indian Tribe, Kenai Native Association and a CIRI shareholder. She also was a member of the American Legion Post No. 20 for 23 years.
Her hobbies included going to Spirit Lake and sitting by the fire, eating marshmallows with her family surrounding her. She also enjoyed dancing, darts, going to the beach and was an excellent cook, her family said.
"Esther loved laughing and always enjoyed a good joke. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, wife, sister and auntie. She would always be available for a good cry. She was also dedicated to her job at the state and enjoyed helping people. She will be loved and missed by all who knew her," her family said.
Mrs. Segura was preceded in death by her mother; Elizabeth Wilson; father, Paul Wilson; brother, Rudy Wilson; sister, Doris Haskell; granddaughter, Lillian K. Fitzpatrick; and brother-in-law, Victor Segura Sr.
She is survived by her husband of 38 years, William "Billy" Segura Sr.; daughter, Elizabeth Segura; son, William Segura Jr.; grandchildren, Hanna Segura, Savanna Segura, William Segura III, Clara Bradford and Andrea Paula Elizabeth Williams; brothers, Paul and Bobby Wilson; sisters, Dolly and Dottie Lecceardone and Julia Wilson; brothers-in-law and their spouses, James O. and Carol Segura Sr., Rick and Patti Segura, Dave and Sandy Segura and Ed and Elizabeth Segura; sisters-in-law, Rita Smagge, Claire Swan and her husband, Van, Gert Frostad, Peggy Segura; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Arrangements were made by Peninsula Memorial Chapel in Kemai.
