The Kenai Parks and Recreation Department selected Ken and Shelly Peterson as winners of this week's Kenai Beautification Garden of the Week award. The Peterson home, located off South Forest Drive on Pine Street, is adorned with hanging baskets and a well-established perennial garden.

The Soldotna Chamber of Commerce presented June Warta with its final Yard of the Week award for the summer. Warta lives at 279 W. Redoubt in Soldotna.

Yard tip: There are occasions when portions of the lawn may decline or die-out due to weather, disease or soil conditions. If the areas are small, they often can be overseeded with suitable variety or mix. Prior to seeding, the areas should be prepared. Dead grass and thatch can be removed with a rake. The soil surface can then be raked to allow for good soil to seed contact. A thin layer of soil or sand also may be put down to create a new seedbed. New commercial products that combine a fibrous mulch and grass seed can simplify the process.
