Oilers drop two in Wood Bat tourney

Posted: Monday, July 29, 2002

The Peninsula Oilers dropped a pair of games at the Anchorage Bucs Wood Bat Tournament at Mulcahy Stadium in Anchorage.

The Oilers lost 6-4 to the Alaska Goldpanners of Fairbanks in their first game of the day, then dropped a 7-1 decision to the Anchorage Glacier Pilots.

The Oilers-Glacier Pilots game was used as a makeup for the July 18 rainout at Coral Seymour Memorial Park in Kenai, and the win gives the Pilots a share of the Alaska Baseball League championship, along with the Goldpanners.

The Oilers' afternoon started out promising. Chris Graziano singled to lead off the game with the Goldpanners and stole second. After a walk to Brian Wahlbrink, Graziano scored on a single by Andy Schutzenhofer.

Fairbanks got the run back in the bottom of the first, then added four more in the second inning. Grant Rogers had the big hit of the inning, a three-run double with two outs and the bases loaded.

Fairbanks' Chad Redfern hit a solo shot in the bottom of the third inning.

The Oilers scored one run on a double by Preston Griffin in the sixth, and added two runs in the seventh on a single by Wahlbrink, but the Oilers couldn't get another run across the plate. Under the tournament format, the game ended after seven innings.

Jake Postlewait took the loss.

Because it counted as a league game, the Oilers had the full nine innings to work with against the Glacier Pilots. The Oilers scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the second when Griffin singled, advanced on a groundout and scored on a single by Daniel Underwood.

Anchorage answered with three runs in the top of the third inning, though, all on a home run by Drew Anderson.

The Glacier Pilots cushioned their lead with four runs in the top of the ninth scored on two hits and an error.

With the loss, the Oilers complete their ABL schedule with a record of 15-20, seven games behind the co-champion Glacier Pilots and Goldpanners.

The Oilers are 1-2 in Wood Bat play and 19-27 overall. The losses snap a five-game winning streak.

The Oilers play the Omaha Zone today at 9 a.m.
