WASHINGTON (AP) -- The committee writing the 2000 Republican Party platform has included wording that backs oil development in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Alaska Sen. Frank Murkowski said Friday.
One plank in the party platform states that it will ''promote environmentally responsible exploration and development of oil and gas reserves on federally owned land, including the coastal plain of Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.''
The wording was proposed by Murkowski, who said it lines up with a comprehensive energy plan introduced in Congress last spring.
Another plank includes support for the nation's timber industry. It states that the GOP backs sustainable forest management ''in place of no-growth policies that have devastated communities in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska.''
