Sockeye salmon count classic under way

The Sterling Senior Citizens Center presents its sixth annual Kenai River Sockeye Salmon Count Classic. Guess the number of sockeye salmon that cross the Alaska Department of Fish and Game's fish counter as of noon Aug. 7.

Half the money from tickets will be given out in prizes. The closest guess receives 75 percent of the pot, the second closest gets 15 percent, and third closest gets 10 percent. Tickets are $2. The deadline for entries is Wednesday. Prizes will be awarded Aug. 24.
