District tourney goes to Twins

The Kenai American Legion Post 20 Twins proved to be the top team in District II, taking the district tournament in Fairbanks this week.

The Twins had a first-round bye in the three-team tournament, and won their first game 1-0 over the host Fairbanks 49ers Wednesday. On Thursday, the Twins defeated the Wasilla Road Warriors 5-0 to take the tournament title and the district’s top seed for the state tournament, which begins Tuesday.

Kevin Epperheimer pitched nine innings for the opening-game win, scattering three hits while fanning 12 batters and not issuing a walk.

Epperheimer also scored the game’s only run, singling in the sixth and stealing second. Epperheimer was able to score on errors by the Fairbanks catcher and center fielder.

Epperheimer had two hits in the game. Luke Oliver and Ethan Waters also picked up hits for the Oilers.

In the tournament title game, the Twins plated a pair of runs in the first inning on an RBI double by Epperheimer and an RBI single from Jake Simpson.

Shawn Isaacs pitched seven innings for the win, striking out eight, walking two and giving up five hits. Steve Mabeus pitched two innings and was awarded the save as he allowed one hit and struck out one batter.

The Twins added three runs in the fifth inning. Jordan Waters singled to drive in one run, and Simpson followed with a two-run double.
