Happy Monday to all my Nikiski neighbors.

I would like to thank Kasilof residents Herman and Dorothy Hermansen for opening their home last weekend to my family. The couple homesteaded and ran a beach site in Kasilof for many years and Herman shared many great stories with us.

The Nikiski Senior Citizens Center will hold a North Road summer festival and garage sale Friday and Saturday at the center. If you have any donations for the sale, call the center at 776-7654.

Vacation Bible School will be held Aug. 6 through 10 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Lighthouse Community Church. The event is for primary-aged children and lunch is provided.

The Nikiski Pool will offer semi-private swim lesson Aug. 7 through Aug. 17. The cost is $50 per student for eight, 30-minute lessons. For more information, call Nigel at 776-8800.

The First Baptist Church of Port Nikiski will hold an Alaska Christian Sportsman's Retreat at Solid Rock Bible Camp Aug. 24 through 26. The weekend will be filled with those sharing their experiences and participants are asked to bring their hobby material for the event. There will be opportunities to learn about paintball, archery, trap shooting, 3-D target shooting, boating and more. Boys ages 12 to 18 will be required to have a family chaperone attend with them. A live auction will be held during the retreat and donations are being sought.

Don't forget to check out the farmer's market held at the Nikiski Senior Citizens Center on Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. through August. Last time I stopped by there were homemade jellies and syrups, along with locally grown mushrooms and other vegetables.

The first day of school is heading our way — Aug. 22. Here are registrations dates for our Nikiski schools: Nikiski Middle-High: Registration will be held from 8 a.m. to noon and 1-3 p.m. Aug. 9 and 10; ice cream social for seventh-graders and teachers at 1 p.m. Aug. 21; and open house will be held at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 23.
