U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens, R-Alaska, left, is shown July 6 being greeted by Jan Hanrahan, center, as Joyce K. Carver Soldotna Public Library Director Margaret Hawkinson watches. Stevens visited the library and with guests for more than an hour. He spoke about the importance of reading, education and family on the nurturing of children. "Jan Hanrahan is an icon in our community who has devoted most of her life to teaching children how to learn and love reading. She worked for the school district for many years as a reading teacher and in her retirement continues as a volunteer to read to children on a weekly basis at a local school," Hawkinson said.
