Sterling area Seniors are having a birthday party to celebrate Alaska's 50th year as a state. Sterling residents are invited to come to the center Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. for food, contests, displays, craft projects and entertainment.
Attendees are asked to wear their favorite Alaska T-shirts and hats. This statehood celebration is a gift from the Sterling Senior Center to its community's residents.

The Kenai Peninsula Archers will hold a 3-D shoot at 1 p.m. Saturday, with registration at 12:30 p.m. at the range located on North Arc Loop Road, which is south of the Soldotna landfill.
The cost is $10 for members and $20 for non-members. This will be the last 3-D shoot prior to the opening of archery season. Call Len at 262-7375 for more information or directions to the range.
The Great Alaska Council, Boy Scouts of America Tustumena District is starting its Scouting year up. It will hold a leadership round table meeting from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 6 at the Cook Inlet Aquaculture Association Building on Kalifornsky Beach Road. Unit leaders are asked to bring their calendar to be incorporated into the district calendar. Scout volunteers may attend. The Kenai Peninsula Food Bank's 13th annual Soup Supper and Auction tickets are available at the food bank at 33955 Community College Drive in Soldotna or call 262-3111.
The Empty Bowl event will be held at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 29 at Kenai Central High School. It will feature handcrafted pottery bowls created by local potters and soups made by local restaurants and cooks. Desserts will be ColdStone Creamery treats and a chocolate fountain.
Tickets are $40 each or for $100 attendees will receive two tickets and two raffle tickets to win $2,000.
Donations are needed for the live and silent auctions. Volunteers to pickup donations or to help at the event may call Amber at 262-3111.
