There has been a buzz of activity at the course along with players and friends coming back from summer vacations. The start of school in less than a month away. Say it ain't so!
A few players who had not been around this summer commented that Birch Ridge is in the best shape they have ever seen it! So if you haven't been out to play, now is the time! Thank you to the crews who work so hard to get the course in this condition and keep it in great shape. We do appreciate it!
Following last week's Walker Cup, things have slowed down a little, but not too much. This Saturday is the Phil Turkington Classic Tournament sponsored by Soldotna Elks. This charity event is a great tournament, paying out all sorts of prizes. Our friend Chiya Bazan, playing her first round of the year on Tuesday, will be participating. Chiya, previous Women's Peninsula Amateur Champion, has been suffering from some health issues this past year. Her goal was to get healthy so she could get back out on the golf course. Welcome back, Chiya!
Who's the best golfer on the Kenai? If you think you are then this is your opportunity to prove it. On Aug. 8-9 is the 35th Annual Peninsula Amateur Golf Tournament. This is one of the last tournaments of the year where you can really challenge yourself and your golf talents. Prizes will be awarded for low gross and low net in each of the men's and women's flights. You can sign up at the pro shop.
There were 13 soggy seniors who played Senior League on Monday. Sid Cox led the way with a net 31. George Cullum led in accuracy by taking closest to the pin on hole Nos. 6 and 8, while Chuck Rider had the long putt on No. 9. The seniors tell me that next Monday will be nicer and they look forward to seeing everyone.
Tuesday Morning Ladies outdid themselves with a spectacular luncheon following a great round of golf. The teams played a scramble and low net went to Elaine Anderson, Chiya Bazan, Lisa Parker and Jane Tongen. Low gross was captured by Carol Hussey, Cheryl Hammarstrom, Louise Schadle and Jan Stenga. Rita Geller hit a spectacular shot on No. 6 to gather distinction and cash, while nobody wanted to outdo the others on No. 8, so this will carry over to next Tuesday.
Barbecue ribs, beans, potato salad, coleslaw and baklava was served at Tuesday Couples Night, a real treat to the 16 couples that turned out in the semi-marginal weather to play another thrilling round. The game of choice was a two-person "Chaplin." Both players tee off, then for the second shot, the man hits the lady's tee shot while the lady hits the man's tee shot. For your third shot you choose the best ball and then take alternate shots until you putt it into the cup. The head "Chaplin" last night was the team of Tanna and Mike Chenault. Second, third and fourth had to be determined in a card-off, with Kathy and Jerry Herring capturing second, Sally and Steve Tachick third and Sue and George Stein fourth.
We are always looking for the shot that brings us back to the game, the memorable moment so to speak. I understand Steve Tachick had a very memorable moment last night -- with the ball 30 yards from the hole, Steve's chip landed about five feet from the hole then one hopped it right into the cup! Nice shot, Steve!
Congratulations to Birch Ridge Golf Course and the Walker Cup team for winning this year's Walker Cup. After a sizzling opening round by the Birch Ridge golfers on Thursday, Kenai Golf Course came charging back to make it close going into Sunday's singles matches. The Birch Ridge team pulled together and held up under substantial pressure to pull off the victory. It was an honor to watch all of the golfers from both courses and to see the respect and admiration they had for each other.
