Bird Homestead Golf Report: Bird Homestead's String tourney draws 12 people even with rain

Posted: Friday, July 30, 2010

Summer seems to be leaving us but the golf season is still in full swing at Bird Homestead Golf Course. We held the Bird Homestead Golf Association Annual String Tournament on Saturday with 12 people showing, even with the rain.

The big winners of the day were Roy Bird, Al Dettmer and Jeff Gillman, coming in 18 under par. Wow, how wonderful is that, even when soaking wet? Don McGee, Daughn Carpenter and Max Carpenter came in second shooting 5 under. It was a lot of fun and we had some great prizes and a huge thank you to Jersey Subs for their donation of several wonderful sub sandwiches for all to eat after the tournament.

Ladies, we want you. Our Monday night ladies had only four this week but they played a great round. Jackie Risch and Judi Artman beat out Pat Bird and Amanda Bird by one stroke shooting 1 under par. Nice job ladies.

Wow, what a great turnout for Tuesday men's night. We had 26 guys show and play some good golf. Paul Zimmerman took the long drive and John Zimmerman was the lucky winner on the eighth hole for closest to the pin. Carl Forsyth was the real lucky guy he managed to land 20 feet, 6 inches, from the pin on the sixth hole, taking about four weeks worth of buildup home with him and shooting a pure birdie on the sixth hole. Nice job Carl. I am sure the rest are envious.

The first-place team of Trevor Hordemann, Dave Gardner, Roy Bird and Justin Bird came in 4 under par beating out Paul Zimmerman, John Zimmerman, Chris Schimschat and Duane Tachick, who shot 3 under. All in all it was a great night of golf.

We have the Funny River Chamber of Commerce scramble on Friday starting at 1 p.m. Anyone interested can call the Funny River Chamber or the golf course for more information. Entry forms are available at both places and will be accepted until 12:30 on Friday. Be sure to get your entry in and come out and have some fun.

Bird Homestead Golf Course is gearing up for the seventh annual Fall Classic. Entry forms are available at the clubhouse and this is usually a full tournament. Be sure to get your entry in and if you need a cart be sure to call the clubhouse and reserve one as they are limited. The Fall Classic is scheduled for Aug. 28 at 10 a.m. This is an 18-hole scramble format tournament with long drive, closest to the pin and door prizes and great food afterward.

Our next scheduled event is Aug. 7 for the College Heights Baptist Church Coed Golf Tournament. This tournament is an 18-hole, blind-draw tournament with all the proceeds going to the children's orphanage in Yekepa, Liberia. Entry forms are available at the church and the clubhouse. Carts are limited so be sure to call and reserve yours today.

The clubhouse is still hopping busy and you will always find friendly faces here. Come on out to Mile 11.8 Funny River Road and check it out. The course is in the best shape ever and the rain (as much as we don't want it) is really keeping things green. We are here seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Two things that everyone does in the rain is fish and golf, so come on out and see us.
