Former Soldotna resident Pearl (Waller) Birtciel died Thursday, July 12, 2001, in Apache Junction, Ariz., following a heart attack. She was 65.

A memorial service was held July 14 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Apache Junction.

Mrs. Birtciel was born July 27, 1936, in Salisbury, Md. In 1973, she and her new husband, Cecil Waller, moved from the East Coast to Soldotna with their children. Though they were on their honeymoon, they later decided to stay.

Mrs. Birtciel was one of Jehovah's Witnesses and active in the ministry. She was a self-sacrificing person who always put the needs of others ahead of her own, her family said.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Cecil, who died in 1992 after they had been married for 19 years.

Mrs. Birtciel is survived by her husband, J.R. Birtciel of Apache Junction; sons and daughters-in-law Ray and Shannon Merritt of Soldotna and Chris and Trish Merritt of Kenai; grandchildren Scott and Bethany Merritt of Kenai; sister, Millie Jones of Girdletree, Md.; and numerous other siblings, nieces, nephews and friends.
