Miners outlast Oilers

The Mat-Su Miners defeated the Peninsula Oilers Wednesday at Mulcahy Stadium in a matchup of the only two undefeated teams in the Wood Bat Invitational.

Mat-Su now is alone at the top of the tournament standings with a 3-0 record.

The Oilers drop into second place at the tournament and join the Alaska Goldpanners of Fairbanks at 2-1.

Athletes in Action, 1-1 in the tournament, faced off against the Anchorage Bucs late Wednesday night.

The Oilers lost 4-3 in nine innings to Mat-Su Wednesday. The games are scheduled for seven innings.

Mike Kelly ended the game when he singled in Jed Lowrie to make a loser out of Oilers reliever Mike Ekstrom.

Mat-Su took a 1-0 lead into the top of the sixth inning before the Oilers' bats heated up.

With one out, Joe Holland started the rally with a single. Holland eventually scored on a single by Josh Lex. When both Lex and Dusty Bensko scored on an error, the Oilers had a 3-1 lead.

However, Mat-Su came right back to tie the game with two runs in the bottom of the inning.

Kelly also picked up the win in relief for the Miners, pitching two scoreless innings.

The Oilers face Athletes in Action today in a 4 p.m. game in the Wood Bat Invitational. The game can be heard on 1140 KSLD.
