Reader predicts future headline

Posted: Monday, July 31, 2006

With this year’s poor sockeye return becoming big news, I would like to predict the future headline of the big story in our paper around Aug. 17. The headline will be something like this “REDS MAKE LATE SURGE” after the “sonar” numbers trickle down to near nothing by Aug. 1, they will suddenly start climbing and we will have 50,000-plus entering the river each day by Aug. 11.

Most people with any kind of common sense will know these are pink salmon, but Fish and Game will conveniently call them sockeye and the escapement goals will be met and the nets will get an emergency opener so they can ruin the silver run. Then Fish and Game can spend the winter in their hap hap happy place, lala land.

Most years Fish and Game amaze me at the depths they will go just to manipulate the numbers. But not this year! Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me! I sure hope F&G will prove me wrong, but I don’t think they will since history is known to repeat itself.
