Two Hoonah loggers die in accident

HOONAH (AP) -- A tree used as a makeshift hoist toppled Monday, killing two Hoonah loggers, authorities said.

Stephen Lindoff, 33 and Ronald Ely, 34, were using a cable and pulley system hooked to a live tree to hoist logs up an embankment, Hoonah Police Chief Bob Beasley said.

The weight of the logs pulled the live tree out of the ground. As it fell, it struck and killed both men.
