ANCHORAGE (AP) -- Anchorage was one of 10 ''All American'' cities honored in the nation's capital during a ceremony Wednesday.
The National Civic League made the choices. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Mel Martinez told community representatives that their cities' work ''has strengthened the entire nation.''
Christopher Gates, president of the National Civic League said the cities' ''accomplishments serve as an inspiration to all communities across the country.''
Anchorage was noted for the 2001 Special Olympics World Winter Games; Anchorage Youth Court, in which teenagers govern their peers' behavior; and Bridge Builders of Alaska, which promotes harmony among the city's ethnic groups.
The league has been making the awards for 53 years. This is the fourth time it has recognized Anchorage.
