ANCHORAGE (AP) -- A 12-year-old Ambler boy drowned in the Kobuk River on Wednesday night.

Alaska State Trooper spokesman Greg Wilkinson said Dennis Cleveland was swimming with friends in the Kobuk River when he apparently swam too far from shore and could not get back.

He disappeared at about 6 p.m. and his body was recovered at 7:15 p.m. Rescuers attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation for about 45 minutes before the boy was declared dead.

Ambler is 325 miles northwest of Fairbanks.
