This week's race: Brickyard 400

Posted: Thursday, August 01, 2002

WHERE: 2-mile rectangular-shaped oval at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indianapolis

WHEN: TV coverage starts at 2 p.m., race starts at 2:30

BROADCAST: TelevisionNBC-Ch. 26; RadioIndianapolis Motor Speedway Network

DISTANCE: 200 laps

2001 WINNER: Jeff Gordon

NOTES: While Indianapolis Motor Speedway remains one of the most revered pieces of racing real estate, it doesn't lend itself to interesting stock car racing. The corners are too flat to allow side-by-side racing, resulting in a lot of drag races down the straightaways and a lot of follow-the-leader in the turns ... Indiana native Jeff Gordon, who grew up 20 miles away from the speedway in Pittsboro, has won three of the eight Winston Cup races at the Brickyard.
