City of Kenai, Mayor Williams responsible for Rec Center closure

Posted: Friday, August 01, 2003

It is time to get the facts straight on why the recreation center is closed. The recording on the recreation center phone number says that the closure is due to a court order favoring Friends of the Rec Center, Mark and Anita Necessary and Cliff Massie, the plaintiffs.

That is a straight out lie. The center is closed because the city manager, the mayor and the city council closed it.

When the court ruled that they were in violation of their city ordinance concerning the contract of services, and voided the contract with the Boys and Girls Club, the city's choice was to close instead of continuing to operate the center as in the past.

The closure is the city administration trying to place blame other than where it belongs, instead of admitting they had made a mistake. The resources, the personnel, and the public support was there to reopen within 2 or 3 days after the Boys and Girls Club vacated the premises.

Please know that the plaintiffs in the court case have tried to establish a working relationship with the city, as has the recreation council, only to be rebuffed by the city. They refuse to meet to discuss a workable solution.

The closure lies entirely with the city and their refusal to open the center for unexplained reasons.

Cliff Massie, Kenai
