Around the PeninsulaKids invited to jungle adventures

This year's theme of the Sterling Baptist Church vacation Bible school is Jungle Adventures. The school runs from 6 to 8:30 p.m. today through Friday. Children are invited to learn more about God while singing, doing crafts, listening to Bible stories, playing games and eating snacks. Toddler hour slated

Toddler hour for children ages 5 and under is available from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesdays at the Kenai Recreation Center. There is no fee. Parents are required to stay with their children.

Kids' celebration set

The Boys and Girls Club will celebrate National Kids Day and the end of its soccer season from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Kenai Middle School. A free barbecue and family activities also are planned. It is open to the public. For more information, call 283-2682.

Golf tourney fund-raiser planned

Isom's Cafe, in conjunction with Bird Homestead Golf Course, will sponsor a nine hole golf tournament to benefit the Kenai Peninsula Food Bank at 1 p.m. Sunday. There will be a shotgun start. Interested community members can register their own teams or the golf shop can help put a team together. For more information or to register, call 260-4653.

Soldotna chamber seeks beauty

Nominations for the Soldotna Chamber of Commerce annual beautification awards are being accepted through Aug. 12. The program is a way to recognize residences and businesses for landscaping efforts in and around Soldotna.

Winners will be announced at weekly chamber meetings and receive a $25 gift certificate. Nominations should be submitted to the chamber office or e-mailed to robyn@soldotnachamber.com. For more information, call 262-9814.

Garage sale fund-raiser set

The Nikiski Senior Citizens Center will host a bazaar, garage sale, flea market fund-raiser Aug. 12 and 13 at the center. Space is available and food vendors and bands are encouraged to apply. Donations are being accepted at the center. For more information, call 776-7654.

Community meeting planned

The Sterling Community Coalition will host a town hall meeting at 7 p.m. Aug. 18 at Raven Contractors, Mile 84.5 of the Sterling Highway. Gary Davis, head of the roads department for the Kenai Peninsula Borough, will be the featured speaker. The topic will be the Funny River Bridge Project. For more information, call sccgak@yahoo.com.

CES seeks volunteers

Central Emergency Service is seeking firefighter and emergency medical services volunteers for its Firefighter One Academy beginning Sept. 1. Recruits also are needed from the Kasilof and Funny River areas. Participants must be 18 to apply. For more information or to pick up an application, stop by CES Station One at South Binkley and the Sterling Highway.
