Library plans August events
A Kenai Library Commission meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Call for location.
The Kenai Peninsula Orchestra youth Ensemble will perform at noon Aug. 10 at the library. Community members are encouraged to bring a lunch and watch.
Friends of the Library is offering raffle tickets for the chance to win a grand prize of $7,500 or 15 other cash prizes. The tickets include a prime rib dinner for two. Only 300 tickets are available. The cost is $100 per ticket.
The dinner and drawing will be Oct. 28, followed by a dinner and dance Oct. 29. Proceeds will benefit the Kenai Community Library. For tickets, call the Friends of the Library.
The library also will host a number of club meetings and events open to the public throughout the month of August.
Toddler Time story hour is held at 11 a.m. Wednesdays at the library.
Preschool story hour is held at 10:30 a.m. Thursdays at the library.
A beginning Internet class will be offered from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Aug. 8 in the library conference room. The class will cover basic Internet skills and searching techniques. To register, call Julie at 283-4378.
The Totem Tracers Genealogy Society will be at the library at 1 p.m. Aug. 13 for Resource Saturday.
Friends of the Library will meet at 5:45 p.m. Aug. 15 at the library.
The Writers Group will meet at 6 p.m. Aug. 18 in the library conference room. Anyone who enjoys writing for profit or pleasure is invited to attend.
The Book Club will meet at 7 p.m. Aug. 30 in the conference room to discuss "What's class got to do with it? America Society in the 21st Century." By Michael Zweig.

Citizen scientists sought
The Alaska Citizen Science Project is looking for volunteers in Southcentral and Interior Alaska to help study bats and to monitor nesting loons and grebes.

Space camps available
The Challenger Learning Center of Alaska in Kenai will host a variety of activities. For more information and a compete listing of what it has to offer, call 283-2000.
Young Astronauts Camp A day camp that features hands-on activities offered from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesdays and Thursdays. Campers can register for any combination of days. Tuesdays focus on robotics and simple machines and Thursdays feature rocketry and flight. For children ages 7-9. The cost is $20 per day.
Cosmic Adventure Camp These week-long residential camps are held now through Aug. 12. They feature hands-on, minds-on activities in math, science, launching rockets, robotics and astronomy. Campers work together to construct a project underwater at an area pool. Campers sleep in space dorms. There will be different programming for each week. For children ages 10-15. The cost is $300 per week.
Womens' run seeking volunteers
The LeeShore Center is seeking volunteers for its 18th annual Kenai Peninsula Run for Women on Aug. 13. Volunteers are need to staff water tables, serve lunch and oversee safety along the race route. Safety volunteers will need to take a short flagging course at the Kenai Police Department a few days prior to the run. For more information or to volunteer, call 283-9479.
