Funny River set to celebrate

The Funny River Festival will be held today, Saturday and Sunday. The theme is "I Can't Bear To Be Anywhere But Funny River, Alaska" For more information and schedule of events, call Jill Tyler at 262-6148. Registration for the horseshoe tournament will be held at noon Saturday at the Funny River Community Center. The cost is $10.

Archers take aim

The Kenai Peninsula Archers will hold a 3D shoot at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at its outdoor range off the Sterling Highway on North Arc Loop Road. The fees will be $10, first time 3D archers free, non-members and guests are $20. For more information, call 262-7375.

Volunteers sought

The Veterans Administration Volunteer Service on the Kenai Peninsula is seeking volunteers to help with its veterans and family picnic. The group will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday to begin planning the event.

The picnic will be for all veterans and their families. Veterans to not have to be a member of an organization to attend.

Social Security expands service

Beginning Wednesday the Social Security Administration will have a representative at the Kenai Senior Citizens Center on the first Wednesday of each month. The representative will be available to assist with filing for new or replacement Social Security cards.

Visitors also may schedule appointments to file for retirement, disability, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and/or conduct post-entitlement reviews. To schedule a webcam appointment, call 1-866-772-3081 or inquire via

Web cam.

It will continue to provide regular scheduled service to visitors via real-time Web cam linked to the Anchorage office. The service is available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the first and third Wednesday of each month. Webcam services provide: connectivity to a live person, accessibility to data for questions, availability for visitors without access to phones and/or computers.

SoHi student registration, open house scheduled

Soldotna High School will hold its registration from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 2:30 p.m. Thursday and Aug. 8. Its open house will be held at 6 p.m. Aug. 28. For more information, call Stephanie Bohrnsen at 260-7000.

Donations needed

Donations are being accepted at the VFW Post No. 10046, 134 N. Birch St. in Soldotna for its second annual garage, craft and bake sale to be held August 15, 16 and 17. Tables may be rented for $10. To reserve a table or for more information, call 262-2722 or 262-1262.

Caregiver meeting planned

The National Family Caregivers Support Program will hold the following meetings:

* Aug. 18 -- caregiver training from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Kenai Senior Citizens Center. Jason Larson with Geneva Woods will discuss "Oxygen and Respiration."

* Aug. 19 -- caregiver peer support meeting from 1 to 2 p.m. at Sterling Senior Center.

* Aug. 26 -- caregiver peer support meeting from 1 to 3 p.m. at Soldotna Senior Citizens Center.

The Clarion is seeking recipes to include in its Wednesday Food section. Send recipes to, fax them to 283-3299 or drop them by the office at 150 Trading Bay Drive in Kenai. Name, address, contact number and brief description of how you came up with or came by the recipe is needed.
