Photography exhibit to open Friday

The fourth annual Summer Exhibition of Photography opens Friday and will run through Sept. 8 at the Kenai Visitors and Cultural Center. The exhibit features photographic works of the Kenai Peninsula Photographers Guild. There is a $3 general admission. Children are free.

Sterling Community Club holds Fun Day

The Sterling Community Club will hold its "Sterling Community Summer Fun Day" on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the corner of the Sterling Highway and Swanson River Road. Fun Day will feature games for all ages, barbecue, cotton candy, Fun Jump, Orbotron and clowns. A 5K and 10K run/walk will be held at 10 a.m., with registration at 9 a.m., at the log cabin. There will be entertainment by local groups from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call 262-6764 if you want to entertain. The Famous Pie Auction will be held at 4 p.m. Call 262-4186 to donate your famous homemade pie. A Benefit Auction will be held at 4:30 p.m. Call 262-5409 to donate items. Free craft booth space is available; call 262-6764 to sign up. Relays and contests for all ages will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. A schedule will be on the grounds.

A coed volleyball tournament will be held from 11 a.m. to noon for sixth- through eighth-graders, and for high school and up at 12:30 p.m. Call 262-6764 to register.

Kenai Elks to hold second annual soccer shoot

Kenai Elks Lodge No. 2425 will hold its second annual Elks Soccer Shoot on Sunday starting at 1 p.m. This event is open to both boys and girls in four age groups -- 7 and under, 8 and 9, 10 and 11, and 12 and 13. Following the contest, certificates and soccer balls will be handed out to the top three finishers in each group. Parents are asked to stay around to collect their child's certificate and ball. The top finisher will be sent to state competition.

Whitewater competition set for Sixmile Creek

The Sixmile Whitewater PaddleFest races will be held on Saturday and Sunday. The categories are Downriver and Rodeo on Saturday, and Slalom on Sunday. The races cost $20. Signup is at Boston Bar, Mile 3.2 of the Hope Highway, on Friday night or before the races on Saturday and Sunday. All boaters must have a helmet and personal flotation device to participate. Spectators are welcome, and volunteers are needed to set up gates.

A free potluck barbecue will be held Saturday night. Backcountry Safaris will provide burgers and hot dogs. Participants are asked to bring the side dishes. Please bring drinking water. Port-a-potties will be on site.
