Oilers end 2001 season with victory over Miners

Posted: Thursday, August 02, 2001

A two-run home run by Luke Simmons and a dominant pitching performance by Juan Serrato were all the Peninsula Oilers needed to defeat the Mat-Su Miners 2-1 Wednesday at the 2001 Gillette Bucs Wood Bat Invitational at Mulcahy Stadium in Anchorage.

With leadoff man Mark Teahen on base in the bottom of the first inning, Simmons knocked a two-run home run to right field. Simmons, who will join the Miners for the National Baseball Congress World Series, gave Mat-Su a good idea of what kind of player it would be getting with the blast.

The two runs would be all Serrato would need. Serrato, who in his last appearance pitched the Oilers' only shutout all year, pitched a great game again Wednesday. He went seven innings and gave up one earned run on five hits while walking three and fanning seven. All games at the Wood Bat tourney, except for today's semifinal and Friday's championship, are seven innings.

The game was the last for the 2001 edition of the Oilers. The team ended up its season with a 21-28 overall record.

But the Oilers didn't end their season without affecting the outcome of the tournament. If Mat-Su had beaten the Oilers, it would have advanced to today's semifinal game. However, with the loss the Alaska Goldpanners and Anchorage Glaciers Pilots will play in today's 7:05 p.m. semifinal.

The winner of that contest goes on to face the Anchorage Bucs at 7:05 p.m. Friday in the championship game.

The Bucs finished up round-robin play in the six-team tournament with a 5-0 record. The Goldpanners, Miners and Pilots all checked in at 3-2, while the Oilers and Bay Area Stars finished at 1-4.

Brian Horwitz was the only Oilers player to record multiple hits Wednesday, going 2-for-3.
