The Kenai American Legion Post 20 Twins baseball team opened the Alaska state tournament with a 15-6 win over Dimond Tuesday at Mulcahy Park in Anchorage.
The Twins will play East today at 3:30 p.m.
In Tuesday’s game, Dimond took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, but the Twins posted three runs in both the second and third innings, and tacked on five in the fourth, to take control of the game.
Back-to-back singles by Jordan waters and Jake Simpson got things going for the Twins in the second, and a walk to Ethan Waters loaded the bases. Steve Mabeus drove in one run with a groundout, and Jake Lamphier Lamphier hit a two-run single to right field.
Luke Gilbert hit a solo home run in the third, and after Kevin Epperheimer reached on an error and Waters singled, Simpson delivered a two-run triple.
In the Twins five-run fourth, the Twins sent 11 batters to the plate. Luke Oliver picked up an RBI with a single, Simpson drove in a run with a double, and the twins also scored runs on a pair of wild pitches.
The Twins tacked on three runs in the sixth inning as Lamphier hit a two-run double and Oliver singled in a run.
In the seventh inning, Gilbert doubled advanced on a wild pitch and scored when Waters hit into a double play.
Epperheimer picked up the win for the Twins, allowing six runs, four of them earned, on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts in six innings of work. Mabeus pitched a scoreless seventh, working around a pair of walks and a hit.
