Man dies when roof collapses

A Soldotna man was pronounced dead at the scene after a garage caved in on top of him.

William Schofield, 71, was working with heavy equipment on his property when he struck the building, causing it to collapse.

"A roof had fallen down on the patient's head and caused massive injuries," said Gary Hale, Central Emergency Services fire marshal. "No respirations or pulse was found. He was pronounced dead on arrival."

Megan Peters, public informations officer with Alaska State Troopers, said the 911 call came in shortly after 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Schofield's body was released to the family. No suspicious circumstances or foul play is suspected, Peters said, and troopers are classifying Schofield's death as accidental.

Schofield's daughter, Joy Lyon, said services for her father will be held Sunday at 4 p.m. at Sterling Baptist Church.
