Summer festival set

The Nikiski Senior Citizens Center will host its annual summer festival today and Saturday. For more information, call 776-7654.

Funny River festival slated

The Funny River Chamber of Commerce Community Association will host a community festival today through Sunday. Golf scramble, cribbage and nickels tournaments will be held today; a parade, opening ceremony, games, booth activities, cake walk, split the pot raffle, drawings, horseshoe tournament, spaghetti dinner and bingo will be held Saturday; and Sunday a pancake breakfast, drawings, art contest, auction and quilt raffle will be held. Seniors to grill up steaks

The Sterling Senior Center will host a steak dinner fundraiser from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the center. Steak, twice-baked potatoes, green beans with bacon and onions, rolls, salad, dessert and beverages will be served. The cost is $12.50 per person. For more information, call 262-6808.

Chicken dinner fundraiser set

Kenai Aerie Eagles Ladies Auxiliary will hold a homestyle chicken dinner fundraiser at 6:30 p.m. Friday. The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 10 and under. For more information and location, call 283-4938 after 2 p.m.

Historical society to meet

The Soldotna Historical Society will meet at 9 a.m. Saturday at the main museum building on Centennial Park Road in Soldotna. For more information, call 262-4157.

Book signing planned

Author and illustrator Chris Jenness will hold a book signing for his new book "Sammy Goes Home" from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Kenai Convention and Visitors Bureau. The book chronicles the adventures of Sammy the salmon as he struggles against the odds to return to the waters of his birth.

Montessori open house, registrations planned

The Ridgeway and Kenai Montessori schools will hold open house and registrations on the following dates:

* Ridgeway Montessori Preschool, 44875 Spruce Ave., Soldotna is accepting fall registration for children ages 3 to 5. For more information, call 262-2699, 262-9769 or stop by the school.

* Kenai Montessori will host a pre-elementary open house for families with children ages 3 to 5 years from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 16 at the school at 220 Main Street Loop across from the Kenai Fire Station. It is open to the public. For more information visit

Agrium plans live fire training

Agrium Kenai Nitrogen Operations will conduct live fire training for their employees and the Nikiski Fire Department at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, and additional sessions at 7:45 a.m. Thursdays, through August and September at the plant at Mile 21 of the Kenai Spur Highway.

Propane, gasoline and diesel will be used in the training. Occasionally there will be smoke and open flames visible from the highway near the north west corner of the plant. For more information, call Rick at 776-3162.

Soup fundraiser tackles hunger

Tickets for the Kenai Peninsula Food Bank's annual Soup Supper and Auction to be held Aug. 25 at Kenai Central High School are available at the food bank at 33955 Community College Drive in Soldotna, by calling 262-3111 to charge tickets to your credit card, and from a board member.

Tickets are $40 and raffle tickets for a chance to win $2,000 are $20. Each ticket holder receives a handcrafted pottery bowl and choices of soups made by area restaurants and staff.

Donations of goods and services also are requested for the live and silent auction.

Community resource directory available

The LeeShore Center's community directory of central Kenai Peninsula resources is available for $25 with a three-ring binder or $15 for refill pages only.

The directory lists more than 80 pages of information on emergency services, family support agencies, health facilities, senior citizens services and veteran's organizations. For more information, call 283-9479.

KCHS swim team practice to begin

Kenai Central High School swim practices will be held beginning at 7:30 a.m. Monday. Athletes are to stop by the pool to pick up paperwork. For more information, call 283-7524.
