Historical society schedules meeting

The Soldotna Historical Society board of directors will meet at 9 a.m. Saturday at the main museum building on Centennial Park Road.

It is open to the public.

Golf tournament ready to swing

Soroptimist International of the Kenai Peninsula will sponsor its annual Chip Away Golf Tournament at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Bird Homestead Golf Course on Funny River Road.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. Snacks and lunch will be provided for participants. The entry fee of $65 includes registration, snacks, lunch, 18 holes of golf and opportunities to win prizes.

Proceeds will benefit area women fighting cancer at Central Peninsula General Hospital and other areas that benefit women on the peninsula.

Fairgrounds work day slated

A work day for the Kenai Peninsula State Fairgrounds in Ninilchik is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The fair committee also is seeking sawdust and wood chips.

Kasilof parenting classes offered

Parents are invited to learn to connect with children and teens by using practical tools for discipline, love and relational issues from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sundays through Aug. 27 at Tustumena Elementary School in Kasilof.

Self-defense class offered for women

A self-defense class for women titled “Rape Aggression Defense (RAD)” will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Aug. 11 and from 9 a.m. to noon and 3 to 5 p.m. Aug. 12 at the Aspen Hotel in Soldotna.

The course will be taught by Brigham Young University campus police officers. The head instructor is Randy O’Harra.

Women ages 14 and older may attend. The cost is $40 (proceeds after base costs will be donated.)

Preregistration is suggested. Class size is limited to 50.
