WAYNESBURG, Pa. (AP) -- Rain fell right on schedule in this Greene County borough. Showers on July 29 meant it has rained in this borough of 41,000 people on July 29 for 106 of the past 127 years, said Bruce Wermlinger, borough administrator.
Legend has it that a farmer told William Allison, a local drug store owner, that it always rained on his birthday. That prompted Allison to start keeping record in the store ledger. The tradition was later popularized by John Daily, who inherited the store from his father, Wermlinger said. Daily made rain bets with the likes of Bing Crosby and Muhammad Ali, and won most of the time.
Nowadays, the borough celebrates Rain Day with a small festival that features food booths, bands and crafts.
The borough recorded one-tenth of an inch of rain, Waynesburg Mayor Kyle Eddy said.
