Four-year-old drowns in Jewel Lake

Posted: Monday, August 05, 2002

ANCHORAGE (AP) -- A 4-year-old boy drowned Sunday night while on a family picnic at Jewel Lake Park near 88th Avenue.

The child disappeared at about 6 p.m. Police, family members and others the lake joined in a search for him. His body was found just after 7 p.m., said Anchorage Police Sgt. Cathy Bushue.

Another child, who was in the water with his father looking for the lost boy, pulled up the buoy line that marks the edge of the swimming area and saw that the boy's foot was wrapped around it. The father pulled the boy out.

It wasn't clear how long the child had been underwater, Bushue said.

He was taken to Providence Alaska Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Police had not yet talked to the parents late Sunday and further details were unavailable, Bushue said.
