Four-year-old drowns in Jewel Lake

Posted: Monday, August 05, 2002

ANCHORAGE (AP) -- A 4-year-old boy drowned Sunday night while on a family picnic at Jewel Lake Park near 88th Avenue.

Jesse Prather disappeared at about 6:30 p.m. Police, family members and others the lake joined in a search for him. His body was found shortly before 8 p.m., said Anchorage Police Sgt. Cathy Bushue.

Prather's foot was tangled in a buoy line that marks the edge of the swimming area. It wasn't clear how long the child had been underwater, Bushue said.

He was taken to Providence Alaska Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Police had not yet talked to the parents late Sunday and further details were unavailable, Bushue said.
