Area Eagles flying to international convention

Past Eagles presidents Michael and Darlene Merlo will attend the Fraternal Order of Eagles International Convention in Kansas City, Mo., this week. They will represent the Alaska State and Kenai 3525 Aerie and Auxiliary.

Boys and Girls Club president to visit Kenai

Roxanne Spillet, president of the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, will visit the Kenai clubhouse Thursday. This will be her first visit to the Kenai Peninsula clubhouse in its 14 years of operation.

Spillet is scheduled to be in Kenai from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., during which time she will tour the facilities and see performances by club members.

According to the area Boys and Girls Club branch, the recent growth of the clubs on the peninsula is largely attributed to Spillet's leadership and the money provided by the Boys and Girls Club of America.

In the past four years, area clubs have received more than $1.1 million from the national office in Atlanta.

The funds have started new clubs in Seldovia, Homer, Soldotna, Nikiski and Seward and helped expand existing programs.

The club expects to receive another $400,000 this year.
