HAINES (AP) -- A Haines man drowned while swimming with a friend in a gravel pit, Alaska State Troopers said Monday.

Matthew W. Bell, 20, of Haines died Sunday while swimming with a friend in gravel pit ponds near the Haines Highway, troopers said.

The friend contacted authorities after he returned from a swim and could not find Bell. Troopers did not identify the friend.

A Fish and Wildlife Protection officer and rescue workers found Bell at about 7:15 p.m. but were not able to resuscitate him.

Bell was pronounced dead at the Haines Clinic. Alcohol was not believed to be a factor in the incident, troopers said.
