Oilers blank Rock City

Posted: Friday, August 06, 2010

Different team, same result.

The Peninsula Oilers' Jake Sabol continued his dominance from last year's National Baseball Congress World Series on Thursday against the Rock City (N.C.) Red Sox. Sabol gave up just two hits through six innings pitched to lead Peninsula to an 8-0 win in seven innings at Lawrence Dumont Stadium in Wichita, Kan. The Oilers take on the San Diego Force today at 10 a.m. ADT.

As member of the 2009 NBC champion El Dorado (Kan.) Broncos, Sabol allowed only one earned run in 17 2-3 innings and was named the most valuable player of the tournament. Sabol shut down the high-powered offense of the Anchorage Glacier Pilots, Oilers head coach Dennis Machado's former team, in last year's title game. Coming into the championship, the Pilots were batting .325 as a team and scored 79 runs in eight games. Sabol yielded just one run in seven innings, keying a 2-1 win.

On Thursday, the Oilers took a 3-0 lead in the third inning when Garrett Wittels had a bases clearing triple to score three runs. Wittels led the team with four RBIs.

Peninsula added four more runs in the fifth inning. With the bases loaded, Mike Miller was hit by a pitch to drive in one run. Sean Madigan then singled to score two runs. Miller added the fourth run when he scored on an error on the catcher.

Wittels added a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning to round out the scoring.

Oilers 8, Red Sox 0, 7 inn.
