KODIAK (AP) -- State regulators have approved a request by the City of Kodiak to become a public utility operating its own electrical distribution system at the local boat harbors.
The city will purchase power at a wholesale rate from Kodiak Electric Association and distribute it to harbor users at a slightly higher customer rate.
Harbormaster Marty Owen said the arrangement could save between $75,000 and $100,000 a year for future harbor electrical maintenance, and it will make it much simpler for vessel owners to receive power.
