ANCHORAGE (AP) -- Breast cancer detection and treatment efforts in Anchorage and Fairbanks got a boost Tuesday with an $80,000 donation raised by Alaska Sen. Frank Murkowski and his wife, Nancy.
The Providence Foundation in Anchorage received just over $32,000, while the Breast Cancer Detection Center of Alaska in Fairbanks received $48,000.
The money was raised in February at a celebration of Murkowski's 20th anniversary in the Senate.
The Murkowskis also raise money for breast cancer care each year with an annual fishing tournament on Prince of Wales Island. The eighth annual tournament begins Saturday.
Alaska has the second-highest breast cancer death rate in the nation -- about 50 women each year.
