Post 20 whips Wasilla

Posted: Tuesday, August 07, 2001

The Post 20 Peninsula Twins stayed alive in the Alaska State American Legion Baseball Tournament in Anchorage Monday with a 19-4 drubbing of Wasilla.

The Twins continue with loser's bracket play when they face off with Juneau at 11 a.m. today.

Post 20, which lost a one-run game on the first day of the tournament to Chugiak, had no problem touching up the struggling Road Warriors' staff for runs Monday.

Wasilla pitchers walked 15 batters and the Twins were able to bring a lot of those free runners to the plate by banging 11 hits throughout the game.

"They definitely helped the cause," Twins manager Lance Coz said of Wasilla's pitchers. "Their pitching staff wasn't really on today."

On the flip side, winning pitcher Brad Burck turned in a solid effort for Post 20. Burck gave up one run on four hits in six innings of work and walked just one batter.

Eric Newby led Post 20 on offense by finishing 3-for-4 with four runs, while David Newby had two hits, three runs and three RBIs, J.D. Pault had two hits, two runs and two RBIs, Dominic Plasencia had two runs, two hits and two RBIs, Kyle Foster had two runs and two RBIs, Gresham Oliver scored two runs and Cory Janson had two RBIs.

Although the huge win would seem just what the doctor ordered after the tough loss Sunday, Coz said he doesn't like lopsided victories in the loser's bracket.

"It's good for batting practice, but sometimes you hate games like that, that let down the intensity you have to have in the loser's bracket," Coz said. "I don't expect to win every game in that manner, so we need to maintain our concentration every pitch, every inning, every baseball game to stay alive."

Coz is expecting a tougher battle from Juneau today. While the Twins finished up 6-1 this year against Wasilla, Post 20 has split four games with Juneau this season. Aaron Hughes gets the start for the Twins today.
