Last summer student art workshops planned

Arts educator Stephanie Cox will present the last in her summer-long series of student art workshops at the Kenai Visitors and Cultural Center on Saturday. From 10 to 11:30 a.m. kids ages 5 to 9 will do collages and from 1 to 2:30 p.m., kids from 9 to 13 will learn the basics of drawing.

There is a $15 fee for the classes and space is limited. Parents should call 283-1991 to register their child.

Art classes offered

The Peninsula Art Guild is offering workshops during the summer at the Kenai Fine Arts Center on Cook Street in Kenai. Anyone interested should contact the teachers to sign up for the classes. Stephanie Cox, at 260-7459, will teach an art class for kindergarten through eighth-grade students on Tuesdays and Thursdays through Aug. 15.

Shirley Lennox will teach a color mixing and brush techniques class for all ages if enough people express an interest in the class. She can be reached at steve-shirley@pocketmail.com. Lou Heite, at 262-1777, will give a paper-making class Sept. 6 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Nominations sought for arts and humanities awards

The Alaska State Council on the Arts and the Alaska Humanities Forum are soliciting nominations for the 2003 Governor's Awards for the Arts and Humanities. The postmarked deadline for nominations is Aug. 15 and the awards will be presented Oct. 24 during a program in Anchorage.

Any individual, organization or institution that has made a significant contribution to the arts and humanities in Alaska is eligible for nomination. Exceptions are current Humanities Forum or State Arts Council board members or staff.

There are four humanities award categories and seven arts award categories. The humanities categories include Humanities Civic Advocate Award, Alaskan Muse Award, Distinguished Cultural Service Award and Humanities Lifetime Achievement Award. The arts categories are Arts Education Award, Arts Advocacy Award, Business Leadership Award, Individual Artist Award, Arts Organization Award, Native Arts Award and the Margaret Nick Cooke Award for Alaska Native Arts and Language.

Nomination forms with the criteria for each of the award categories can be downloaded from either the Humanities Forum or Council on the Arts Web sites. The Humanities Forum site is www.akhf.org. The Council on the Arts site is www.eed.state.ak.us/aksca/. Museum seeks volunteers
